Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA)



Nepal Mountaineering Association was established on 1 November 1973 (2030 Kartik 16) Thursday. It is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organization working as a national alpine association of Nepal to promote mountain tourism, climbing sports, protect mountain environments and preserve and promote cultural heritage of mountain people. It is the only national alpine club authorized to issue climbing permits for 27 mountain peaks of Nepal.

Objectives of NMA

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has the following 7 broader objectives:

  • Explore Mountain peaks and promote for mountain climbing tourism
  • Issue the climbing permits as agreed with the Government of Nepal
  • Protect and promote mountain people, culture and heritage
  • Develop and promote skilled human capital for supporting mountain climbing
  • Develop Sports climbing tourism in Nepal
  • Emergency Rescue, Rehab and Humanitarian support for needy individual/community
  • Preserve natural environment in the mountain region for sustainable future.

History of NMA

  1. 1973 November 1 NEPAL MOUNTAINEERING ASSOCIATION established
  2. 1979 November 12 Manang Mountaineering Training School Established
  3. 1982 October 10 44th General Assembly of UIAA at Kathmandu
  4. 1985 August 4 Site of International Mountain Museum of Pokhara obtained
  5. 1988 Spring Tri-Nation Mount Everest Expedition: Nepal-Japan-China and first time live
    telecast worldwide.
  6. 1991 NEPAL MOUNTAINEERING ASSOCIATION acquires its own building-the present Central Secretariat, Nagpokhari
  7. 1992 May 8-10 UIAA Mountain Protection Commission Meeting in Kathmandu
  8. 1995 December 8-10 UAAA First General Meeting in Kathmandu
  9. 1995 December 1 Foundation of International Mountain Museum laid at Pokhara
  10. 1996 May 29 First felicitation program to honour Nepalese Everest Climber by NEPAL MOUNTAINEERING ASSOCIATION
  11. 1997 May 28-30 International Climbers Meet
  12. 1998 Nepal Government provide site for IMM Park at Kakani
  13. 2000 First time Basic Mountaineering Training conducted for foreigners (Singaporean
    School Student) by Nepalese Instructors
  14. 2001 Spring: Nepal-Mongolia Joint Expedition to Mongolian Peak,later known as Tenzing Norgay Peak (Mongolia) after the successful ascent by Nepalese Mongolians
  15. 2002 May 26-30 UAAA Council Meeting at Pokhara
  16. 2002 May 29 Soft Opening of International Mountain Museum at Pokhara
  17. 2002 June 29 Initiation of International Mountaineers’ Memorial Park at Kakani
  18. 2002 June-2003 May Mt. Everest Golden Jubilee Celebration
  19. 2003 May 28 IMA 2nd General Meeting
  20. 2004 February 5 Grand Opening of International Mountain Museum (IMM) at Pokhara
  21. 2004 October 19 Cho Oyu Golden Jubilee Celebration
  22. 2005 May Makalu and Kanchanjanga Golden Jubilee Celebration
  23. 2005 October 31 30th Jubilation of first woman summit on Mt. Everest
